Doon Social Farm in County Limerick, an experimental site within the SOILCRATES project, has been highlighted by Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine for its commitment to biodiversity, organic farming, and social impact.
Managed by Marian Clarke and owned by Ballyhoura Rural Services CLG, the farm is certified by the Irish Organic Association and provides social farming services and wellness programmes for people across the Limerick and Tipperary region. Located on the grounds of a former convent and secondary school in the village of Doon, the farm combines care, community, sustainability, and land stewardship in a unique working environment.
Biodiversity is central to Doon Social Farm’s approach. The farm has planted more than one hundred native trees and established a riparian buffer zone, helping to protect soil, water, habitats, and local ecosystems. These actions align closely with the ambitions of SOILCRATES, which explores innovative, place-based approaches to soil health, biodiversity, and sustainable land management.
As an experimental SOILCRATES site, Doon Social Farm offers valuable insight into how social farming, organic production, biodiversity enhancement, and rural development can work together to create more resilient farming systems. Its recognition is a welcome celebration of the people and practices helping to shape a more sustainable future for agriculture and rural communities.
