SOIL-VITIS – Sustainable Soil Management in Mediterranean Vineyards: Cover Crops, Pruning Residues, and Microbial Biostimulation

The project proposes a sustainable soil management model for Mediterranean vineyards based on the integration of cover crops, the use of pruning waste, and the inoculation of rhizosphere microorganisms. This strategy addresses the need to reduce the impact of traditional practices, which are responsible for the loss of organic matter and biodiversity, soil compaction, and increased greenhouse gas emissions.

Practices

  • Apply minimum tillage or no-tillage practices

  • Implement cover cropping (a range of available options

  • Promote species diversification in grasslands

  • Compost, incorporation of shredded pruning waste

  • Apply microbial biostimulants

  • Water erosion control measures

  • Establish and maintain a permanent vegetative cover

  • Implement a system of minimal pesticide use; for example, through mechanical weed control, biological pest control, and similar approaches.
