SpongeSoil – Soil hydraulic bioengineering for salinization prevention and water conservation in subtropical crops
This pilot project, SpongeSoil, aims to address two major challenges affecting the subtropical coast of Granada: the progressive salinisation of soils and water scarcity, particularly in mango and avocado cultivation. To this end, it proposes a comparison between conventional organic management and the monthly application of a microbial biostimulant based on Bacillus velezensis A6, which is expected to enhance soil water retention, improve nutrient mobilisation, and strengthen crop resilience to drought and saline stress.
Its main objective is to demonstrate that this biological solution can reduce irrigation requirements, improve soil structure and fertility, enhance the overall sustainability of agricultural production, and provide a model that can be replicated in other Mediterranean territories.
