SPNA Ebelsheerd as a Light House Soilcrates & Experiment: Water-retention capacity in relation to green manure crops

This experiment is led by a Lighthouse facilitating knowledge sharing and co-creation. An experimental and monitoring area will be set up at Ebelsheerd where SoilCrates partners will carry out measurements over three field seasons (2025–2028). These measurements are aimed at answering research questions about the water storage capacity of the soil. The trial design consists of a multi-year comparison of four green manures, which differ in root architecture. The green manures are sown in the autumn/winter period prior to a fine-seeded spring crop (e.g. onion). The research will take place on a plot of approximately 10–14 hectares, with the green manure regimes rotating annually within the crop rotation plan. This will enable realistic agricultural practice, while limiting soil variation as much as possible.
