SoilHeroic – Assessing soil resilience of heroic mountain vineyards through drones and sensors in terraces and steep slopes

Bodegas Calvente S.L. cultivates steep, terraced vineyards in the coastal- mountain region of Granada (Andalusia, Spain), which is known as “heroic viticulture”. Soils are extremely shallow (<15 cm Depth), with high contents of silt and rock fragments, low in organic matter (<5%), and prone to erosion. Terracing with different management strategies (tillage, organic amendments, etc.) have substantially improved fertility, soil structure, and water retention in comparison to the original hillslopes. To quantify and demonstrate the benefits of terracing and different tillage methods, they propose a pilot study combining UAV thermal imaging, in situ sensors, and collaborative sessions with farmers and researchers within the SOILCRATES Network. We will compare terraces with different tillage strategies and no tillage, and steep slopes with spontaneous vegetated hillslopes and bare soils in real time to demonstrate the
benefits of organic management.
