Leaf cover in pumpkins
(Groenbedekking in pompoenen)

This project aims to develop a regenerative farming method for pumpkins as a sustainable alternative to conventional practices that are using agricultural plastic (including bioplastics containing PFAS) and chemical herbicides. The principle is based on permanent, diversified green manure serving as ground cover. In the spring, strips are removed with minimal tillage to plant the pumpkins, while the remaining strips protect from wind, improve soil structure and stimulate microbial life. The project is also experimenting with overseeding a new cover crop between plants after planting. The goal is to create a robust, regenerative and adaptable cropping system that is resistant to drought and heavy rainfall. This system aims to improve soil health, reduce weeds without chemicals, improve water retention and promote biodiversity. Measurements of soil, plant growth and yields will be taken. The project also includes support from experts. The knowledge gained will be shared in order to offer a reproducible and sustainable model for other producers.
