Gortglass Organic Farm Woodchip & Biochar soil experiment

This project evaluates the application of biochar and woodchip on 2.5 hectares of farmland to improve soil carbon, structure, nutrient cycling, and biological activity. The main trial (2 ha) is compared with two plots: a control with no amendment and a plot treated with a biochar–woodchip mix inoculated with compost tea from worm casts to assess added biological effects.

The study will run over two years on mixed soils, with loamy areas on higher ground and heavier clay below, to test improvements in soil structure under different conditions. The land has had limited fertility inputs, making it suitable for observing changes.
A mix of 15 t/ha woodchip and 5 t/ha biochar will be prepared, blended evenly, and left for three months to partially decompose before being spread carefully to preserve microbial life.

Previous use on vegetable plots showed improved soil texture and crop yields. This trial aims to confirm these benefits on permanent pasture with scientific monitoring.
