Seamus Considine
Considine’s Farm soil structure improvement
This project evaluates a combined approach to improving soil structure, drainage, and grassland resilience on heavy, compacted soils. It addresses common issues such as poor drainage, limited root development, and reduced grass productivity. The experiment involves three main interventions: targeted drainage works, compost application (8 tonnes/acre), and reseeding with a multispecies sward including deep-rooting grasses and herbs. These measures aim to enhance soil organic matter, biological activity, aggregation, and water movement.
A structured field trial will be conducted with baseline soil testing, followed by implementation and monitoring using laboratory analysis and field indicators. Untreated areas will serve as controls to assess impacts. The project focuses on improving soil function, nutrient efficiency, and long-term resilience in a practical, farmer-led and replicable way.
