Soil Architects

The Soil Architects project is a pilot initiative for soil regeneration in Huétor Vega and Monachil (Granada), developed within the SOILCRATES framework. It aims to restore one hectare of degraded land through an integrated approach that combines ecological restoration techniques, microbiome activation, and community participation. A central component is the creation of a Community Soil Laboratory, where citizens actively contribute to cultivating and applying beneficial soil microorganisms.
The main objective of the project is to demonstrate a scalable and replicable model for accelerating soil regeneration in Mediterranean semi-arid environments. This is achieved through the integration of scientific monitoring—based on advanced microbiological analysis—with practical interventions such as organic amendments, agroforestry systems, and water management strategies, all aimed at improving soil health and strengthening local agricultural resilience.
Structured over a total duration of 24 months, the project follows a phased approach including preparation, implementation, monitoring, and final evaluation. In addition to its scientific and technical contributions, the project incorporates a strong social and educational dimension, promoting community engagement and knowledge dissemination through workshops, educational activities, and communication outputs, ultimately delivering a transferable model for wider application in sustainable land management and climate adaptation.
