Targeted grazing with Andalusian donkeys for soil health improvement in the Vega of Granada PAAS-VEGA

The PAAS-VEGA project aims to experimentally evaluate targeted extensive grazing using Andalusian donkeys, an autochthonous endangered breed, as a tool for vegetation cover management and soil health improvement, in comparison with conventional mechanical mowing.
The project will be implemented over 12 months in two experimental farms located in the Vega of Granada. At each farm, treatment plots and control plots will be established, allowing, on the one hand, an internal comparison of the effects of the intervention and, on the other, a comparison between farms with different poplar management systems: an agroforestry system and a conventional poplar plantation system.

Practices

  • Species diversification in grassland

  • Apply water erosion/runoff control, e.g. through contouring

  • Apply perennial crops

  • Apply soil remediation; phytoremediation

  • Apply permanent ground cover

  • Apply system of minimal use of pesticides; e.g. through mechanical weed control, biological control of pests, etc
