Combining the Miyawaki Method with Silvopastural Agroforestry
This project tests the integration of trees and shrubs into farmland using the Miyawaki method of dense planting to improve soil health and resilience. Trial plots will compare four different row widths and tree spacings to assess their effects on soil properties. A diverse mix of species will be used, including trees that enhance nutrient cycling and livestock palatability, as well as species for fruit, nuts, and long-term timber production. Livestock grazing will help shape the developing treescape.
The experiment takes place on shallow, silty loam soils over shale, already managed organically but with limited increases in soil organic matter and depth, and will combine agroforestry with existing regenerative practices.
