From 9–11 December, SOILCRATES research was represented at the Landscapes Across the Mediterranean (CrossMED) – 3rd Edition conference, hosted by Universidad de Granada in collaboration with IEREK Conferences. The event brought together researchers and practitioners working at the intersection of landscape, sustainability, and territorial planning across the Mediterranean region.
Research Spotlight: Soil Living Labs
During the conference, SOILCRATES researcher María Teresa González Moreno presented work developed within the SOILCRATES project and the Living Lab Granada Tierra Viva. The presentation, titled “Soil Living Labs for Sustainable Landscape Management in the Mediterranean: A Systematic Review of European Initiatives,” highlighted how Soil Living Labs across Europe are contributing to more sustainable landscape management. The research reviewed existing initiatives to identify common approaches, strengths, and gaps, helping position Living Labs as practical, place-based tools to connect soil science, land management, and regional planning.
Contribution Beyond the Presentation
SOILCRATES’ involvement extended beyond research dissemination:
- Session moderation: María Teresa González Moreno moderated Session 19: “Urban & Regional Planning Strategies,” supporting dialogue on integrated planning approaches for Mediterranean territories.
- Conference organisation: She also contributed as part of the organising team through EGEMAP (Environmental Geography and Mapping), helping ensure the smooth delivery of the event.
Strengthening Mediterranean Collaboration
The conference provided a valuable platform to connect with experts committed to sustainable landscape management in Mediterranean contexts, environments often facing soil degradation, land-use pressure, and climate stress.
By sharing SOILCRATES insights on Soil Living Labs, the event strengthened links between European soil research, regional planning communities, and landscape practitioners. These exchanges are key to ensuring that Living Lab knowledge supports real-world decision-making and long-term soil resilience.
